On this shelf you will find:

  • Some useful advice for posting on internet forums.

10. Go you big red fire-engine.
11. Get a real hobby as well as gaming. Gaming is fairly antisocial.
12. Girls are not a hobby.
13. Um, oh yes, most importantly - Pick an abstract gaming topic to enjoy and talk about. Eg. - Are games becoming too short, or are we getting too critical? Does age influence our enjoyment?

It's the power of mass production. Thankfully for Sega, the high Dreamcast take up rate will enable them this virtue of Mass Production.

Trinitron technology is quite fascinating. Instead of using a standard shadow mask, sony trinitron technology uses vertical strips of phosphers each for RGB seperated by high tension wires that run up and down the screen(aka aperture grill).

Because Trinitron technology uses an aperture grill it means that the electrons have a greater coverage of the screen, because the shadow mask on the other hand allows much less electrons through. What this means is that you'll get a brighter image on a Trinitron based tube.

Other than occasional pop up its a great buy for your money. It retails at under $90 and is an essential game to have as part of your collection.

Dreamcast - It's here!

You're breaking one of the forum rules by being an accessory to murder. I actually died laughing when I read this.

The case of the Mysterious Hacker...
Originally posted by zarevz:
I contacted Elliot to tell you that the forum was getting hacked into. I also contacted Theo, but he couldn't give me any direct info on how to get directly in touch with you, so that's why I had to settle with Elliot(ucko).

Carey Badcoe was very helpful, if you know her, but she for some reason no longer works with Next any more, but sounded very, very nice(hint, hint). You should ask her out.

Anyway, the post below was posted by the hacker at the time shown below. If you guys want to persue this, you just need to correlate the times of your server to that of the ISP's. Then you can narrow down the users posting at that time within +-5 mins or so and go from there.

Hercy replies:
Talking of people who have too much time on their hands...

From the moment the dame walked in, I knew she was trouble. She had a chip on her shoulder that matched the chip in my Dreamcast. $40 inc GST. She said she had witnessed a hacking. She had; she was hacking away at my heart.

I have two magnums in my desk. One's a gun I keep loaded. The other one's a bottle that keeps me loaded. I told her to sit down and fill me in on the details. The dame told me that the hacker posted just before midnight. All I had to do was correlate the times of her server to that of the ISP's. Then I can narrow down the users posting at that time within +-5 mins or so and go from there.

I couldn't do it alone. I got on the blower* to Elliot and Theo. The dame had a history with Theo. Theo didn't answer. He really was history. Elliot was as much help as a trenchcoat without a cool belt, so I contacted Carey Badcoe. She sounded like one of those people whose real last name is "Badcock", but who try to convince everyone that the "ck" is silent. Her past indiscretions didn't worry me now. I had a job to do. I would have asked her out, but she didn't date cereal.

She told me the hacker left her a note with the initials "HN". There were smilies painted on the walls. I had a sick one on my hands.

I heard the distinctive sound of a gun being cocked** behind my head. The dame had set me up. I used one of my magnums to make a retort, and the other to make a satisfying smashing sound. The dame was drenched. I hauled her up onto the chair by her hair, but only her hair came up with my hand. The dame was wearing a wig.

It was no dame. She had a dodgy goatie. And come to think of it, she'd been playing Star Wars on the other TV all night while everyone else was playing multiplayer games. With his last breath, he gurgled "@|:-<".

*obvious blower/blow her joke omitted.
**ditto

Dreamer replies:
I TOTALLY appreciate you trying to help, but something to be aware of in case something like this happens again. I do not work at Next media. I used to, over 2 years ago. I do freelance work for them these days, that's it. If you're ever trying to contact me, just email dan_toose@siriustel.com.au Don't try any other way... It'll just be involving other people who shouldn't be bothered by such stuff, and I don't want that kind of thing happening.

Zarevz replies:
Good afternoon Dreamer,

I too was rather concerned, at the time, about having to resort to third parties in contacting you, but I tried to be as polite as possible about the matter considering the time over at the Eastern States.

Perhaps I was overestimating the situation, but when thinking back to what was actually done to the forum I'm sure anybody here at that time would agree it was the appropriate action to undertake. I personally hope that nobody hassled you about me getting in contact, because in reality it's not like this is an everyday event, and I'm sure reasonable people would understand.

Remember Dreamer that the hacker could just have easily destroyed other files of more importance without realising (eg. Accounting Databases) and hence you needed to know that this was happening so that you could stop it. I'll make sure to email from me from now on.

Hope your date goes well.

Catch ya.

Dreamer replies:
Someone organise a blind date for me?

Zarevz replies:
Dreamer, you don't know of Carey Badcoe(ex Publisher, Business & Technology)? I know Next is isn't run out of someone's back yard garage, but surely it's withing the same complex...

It actually reminds me of a an Australian Publication, Silicon Chip, that virtually started out in a garage-sized office space. Same thing with another called Cut Throat Cheats over here in Perth, but they later collapsed when the artist and one writer left. It's quite strange as a child when you envisage magazines like Hyper to be the gospel, when in reality it's just everyday people running the things.

BTW - Did Elliot pass on the message?

zarevz replies:
However most people import not just the games themselves, but also the consoles(at this point in time).
Also the Aus cube hasn't been released yet(again at this point in time).

TmpVal1 = DskSize – (BPB_ResvdSecCnt + RootDirSectors);
TmpVal2 = (256 * BPB_SecPerClus) + BPB_NumFATs;
If(FATType == FAT32)
TmpVal2 = TmpVal2 / 2;

BPB_FATSz32 = FATSz;
} else {
BPB_FATSz16 = LOWORD(FATSz);
/* there is no BPB_FATSz32 in a FAT16 BPB */
}

Do not spend too much time trying to figure out why this math works. The basis for the computation
is complicated; the important point is that this is how Microsoft operating systems do it, and it works.
Note, however, that this math does not work perfectly.

PU - The code is there because the paragraph below is referring to it, the joke isn't in the code.

On the contrary, zarevz. LOL@PU
