ha ha bwah!Just check out a couple of DVD related web sites. They're sure to have heaps of FAQs about Widescreen vs Pan and Scan. I've seen some that even have screen shots illustrating what you're missing out in a pan and scan version of a movie. You'll be persuaded IMHO, widescreen's much better but it does take some getting used to.

ah bugger it. Here's my half arsed explanation puts on anorak. Movies at the cinema are presented in a screen ratio of 16:9. A standard TV screen is in a 4:3 ratio. To fit a 16:9 movie onto a 4:3 screen without borders, film editors crop bits off the left and right sides of the picture. That's the "pan and scan" process. If you want to see the movie without bits of the picture being cut out, widescreen's the way to go. It's just a matter of getting used to the borders. I hope that makes sense. I've only got a passing knowledge of this stuff. takes off anorak EDIT - fear my UBB [This message has been edited by Bill Cosby (edited 07-03-2002).]

Yeah, most DVDs are in widescreen. In fact, DVD enthusiasts/anoraks get very upset if a movie is released only in pan and scan. I think DJ posted a thread about Harry Potter being pan and scan a while back. Some DVDs have both a pan and scan and a widescreen presentation of the movie, not many though AFAIK. Doesn't the xbox DVD have a zoom feature? You should be able to set it to zoom in enough so as to remove the borders. Of course, you'll also cut off the sides of the movie picture so it's up to you

cool, thanks for that. I just read a FAQ with some comparison shots and it's quite a differance. I don't know what i'd rather, maybe it depends on the movie.i'm checking out the zoom feature now. so VCR movies cut the sides off too? I thought they were converted in the time between cinimas and home release. thanks i'll leave this thread here so everyone can laugh at me

Well, as I understand it, they do convert it at the time between the cinema and video release - they just convert it by chopping off the sides of the screen. Some videos are in widescreen and some are in pan and scan. I think most are in pan and scan. I'm guessing you'd be used to pan and scan. Once you get used to the borders, I reckon widescreen is far better. I like to see the whole picture!

Went to target looking for a Dvd and they actually had the X-box games like Halo,Project Gotham etc on the shelves??? and they also had all the accesories there too....are they allowed to be doing this a week early? I can't see the point if you can't get a X-box for another week!

watching a movie in pan and scan is like chopping the top and bottom off the mona lisa "because it doesn't fit in the frame".
