Um, it means 'What's up?', as in 'How ya' doin'?' [This message has been edited by The Artful Todger (edited 13-02-2001).]

Adam, Todger is using a not so subtle reference to American sub-culture in an attempt to appear cool. Specifically, he is referring to the Budweiser advertisements in which a group of young fellows call each other up on the telephone and ask "Wassup?". After much wassupping* the answer is "just chillin', havin' a Bud". It is not surprising that you missed this reference given that these advertisements have yet to be aired on Australian television, let alone during popstars in Adelaide--although, it is possible that you may have come across this cultural reference had you had the fortune to see a movie titled "Scary Movie". From memory though, that moving was rated M15+, and so being a 14 year old, it might have been difficult for you to gain entry. Well, I hope this explanation has shed some light on the issue. *not a real word

Umm guys, unless I'm about to get a state the bleeding obvious badge, I actually think that quartet knows the origins of the 'wassuup' greeting, and was responding in turn with his own 'wassuup'.It's possible he's confused you by adding a question mark which, although unnecassary, is still grammatically correct, seeing as how the term is technically a question; a colloquial contraction of 'what is up?' if you may.

Yes, DJ, I thought that might be the case too, although, the icon that :quartet: decided to select for his message suggested to me otherwise--specifically that he was not aware of the socio-cultural context of "wassup". In fact, I think that you have raised an important issue regarding the questionmark. Perhaps :quartet: was actually asking Todger if he had forgotten the questionmark in his initial post, because given the origins of "wassup" it should be followed by such a piece of punctuation.

But having seen the advertisment Prince Underpants, you should be aware that no inflection or intonation in the voices of the actors allude to a question, real, implied or rhetoric. In fact, they appear to use the term 'wassuup' in the same manner that you or I would use the word 'hello'. Anyway, thats the problem with first impressions, you only ever get to make one.

DJ, you make a very convincing argument. I think that you are in fact correct with regards to the inflection utilised by the actors in those advertisements. It is definately used more as a salutory greeting as opposed to an expression of interest in what is happening. Given this, then there should be no questionmark after "Wassup". But this then leads me to wonder further about Adam's intention when he made his post... was he asking "what is 'wassup'", or was he merely asking "what's up?"... without access to Adam's thoughts on this issue, I would be concerned about speculating too heavily on this point, although to the extent that Adam's choice of icon can illuminate the issue, I would suggest that it was the former and not the latter.

Succinctly put. We'll have to wait for Adam to return and give us the inside story and tell is just what exactly, if anything, he was thinking when he typed what he did.Who could presume to know what goes on in the minds of 14 years olds? Maybe we can ask Ants...

Of course another possibility exists - Todger's 'whassup' is in fact a sincere greeting that doesn't lend itself to pop-culture references.PU makes mention of Todger's 'whassup' as specifically referring to America's successful collection of Budweiser advertisements. Does PU assume too much? If the Budweiser adverts represent Todger's motivation for using 'whassup' then I would expect him to denote/signify the vernacular heard in the commercials - something like "whazzzaaa.." or similar. Instead we are presented with the greeting, 'whassup', politely expressed with correct spelling and punctuation.

Thanks for that insight Pep. A fresh perspective on the situation is what we all needed, and you know, you may very well be right.Have myself and PU become so focused on attempting to relate his greeting to the Budweiser promotion, that we've excluded the possibility that this 'wassup' has originated somewhere completely different? The greeting 'wassup' stems from Afro-American youth culture, and is a semi-rhetorical question; what is up? This question requires an answer no more than the greeting 'hello' does, but curiously, can also be answered with its counter-reply, 'nuffin'. The increased permeation of black American culture into the schools and bedrooms of our youth today lead me to quite safely assume, that even before the Budweiser promotional campaign children like the Todger were using 'wassup' as a greeting in an attempt to imitate their black counter-parts.

Of course we could choose to end all speculation and rely on Todger's personal clarification as seen above. I'll include it in this post FYI. quote: Originally posted by The Artful Todger: Um, it means 'What's up?', as in 'How ya' doin'?'
Todger's makes clear his 'whassup' is to be interpreted in its conventional context.

Huh? Dammit! You tricked me! I was trying to work out what quartet was implying in his response, but you had me thinking that I was trying to work out what Todger was inferring by his greeting and you completely derailed my train of thought.
