Sigh.

Nintendo makes one comment about focusing on games over hardware, and suddenly it's the end of Nintendo? Bollocks.

mech's right, Nintendo has been doing that right from the start. Iwata's annoyed at the pressure to bang out a new console every 4-5 years, and that's understandable. It cuts into profits. However, if it comes to making a new console [and it will], Nintendo will make another console.

So in your impartial fanboy opinion, Iwata was just up there spouting shit then? He didn't really mean any of that stuff that he actually said. He only meant "hey let's write some games now" but it came out as "we're reaching the limits of how far we can appeal to consumers by boosting the machine's performance".

Thanks C6, very interesting. I still doubt whether an Xbox 2 will see the light of day, although it's way too early to say one way or the other.

Got a reason for thinking that Scrooge, or is it just speculation and wishful thinking?

Clearly the production and talks about the Gamcube started a few years ago. This ate into the life of the N64. As we know, the last couple of years of the N64, the game lineup has been minimal. I think what they are saying, is not to think about any more consoles and leaving to develop a better range of games on an existing console.

Also I think his comment is correct about graphics not getting too much better. The graphics on the GC, XBox and (maybe) PS2 are very good and any advancements in the graphics would be minimal which means paying $500 or more on a new console with "minimal" graphic improvements would be a waste of money. (I am not saying graphics can't improve, they wouldn't be able to improve that much).

Also I don't want to be playing games that looks very very realistic all the time.

ATM the Gamecube is the last console I will own. Not going to buy any more.

Megaman if you any kind of prior knowledge on what NCL intend to do with the Gamecube, then you would maybe actually understand what Nintendo is trying to do with Gamecube.

Yamauchi said that Nintendo plans to commit to the Gamecube for 8, yes 8 years, so you can maybe understand why Iwata isn't spouting OMFG!!! GCN 2.. Super GAMECUBE 2 w00t, because Nintendo is commiting to this peice of hardware, and not star gazing into the future i.e: Xbox 2 (go figure )

I mean the console has only been on the market less then what?! 9 months all up, and you expect Nintendo come forth say we're in the planning stages with Gamecube 2?! pfft yeah... whatever.

LOL you've just totally missed the point, or have you?!

If they think they can make a profit on an Xbox 2, I guess it will be good to go. So far they have lost money on the Xbox. A lot of money. There are a myriad of possibilities. They may partner with another big company to make a console. They may decide to go software only. A new, yet unknown player may enter the market with a killer console. Microsoft may suffer a decline in fortunes. There are a dozen things that could happen.

I'd be really happy if Nintendo pulled a Sega and went 3rd party. Despite loving their games, something has just never felt right to me about their hardware, even though I buy it anyway...it was the same feeling I got with the Saturn and the DC, that the games were good but the consoles THEMSELVES not exactly worth it. And this is coming from a Sega fanboy.

"You try so hard to reach my level of smartness don't you?" - Blitz11, AKA Rastalant, AKA Wanker.

This victory strengthens the soul of Jonaskin!

No, eight years was Yamazaki's plan. Iwata's "new direction" is (apparently) to support the Gamecube forever. Because graphics can't possibly get any better than Gamecube-quality graphics.

If Nintendo try to do what you fanboys think they're going to do, and just use the same hardware for 8 years or whatever - good luck to 'em. It worked for Sony because they sold so many to begin with - and they put backwards compatibility into their next console so developers would continue to support it.

Check this baby out - current sales for week ended June 2 in Japan.

PlayStation 2: 60,000 (Annual: 1,765,300)
Game Boy Advance: 36,200 (Annual: 1,223,900)
PSOne: 7,900 (Annual: 122,700)
Xbox: 5,700 (Annual: 199,400)
GameCube: 5,400 (Annual: 568,700)
Game Boy Color: 2,200 (Annual: 52,600)
Wonder Swan Color: 1,700 (Annual: 85,300)

PSOne's outselling Gamecube and Xbox in Japan. Scary.

Anyway, my point is - Nintendo can say this, and try this strategy, but it'll all end in tears for them. Sony will release their next console, Microsoft will probably release the Xbox 2, and what - Nintendo thinks it's going to compete with a console that only has 43MB RAM (16MB of which is practically unusable), and media that only holds 1.5Gig? Ha... good luck guys. It worked for Gameboy, but it won't work for Gamecube.

mech: they'll create a niche for themselves in terms of system price though. nintendo still look to be able to drop it a fair bit, but is it possible for xbox and ps2 to get to $300 or lower anytime soon?

while ps2 has done really well at such an expensive price, it's really in that sub $300 category that userbase numbers really start to soar (like with psx).

yamauchi is senile, i don't think you'll be hearing those "8 year estimates" from anyone else at nintendo.

Yeah... but... but... but...

Ummm

Like I said, PS2's got backwards compatability built in, so devs are still releasing PSOne games. Plus the Japanese are mad.
