No the question would be 'Excuse me Sir, is the ad footage from very early development?'. I can't believe you or anyone would agrue that the game don't not look better than it does on the ads. It's nuts.

60hz...

Easy. Switch any game to 60hz and looks at the brick sized pixcels. Switch to 50hz and watch them shrink along with much of the jaggies effect.

Who cares for a slight loss of speed. Burnout is still the fastest game this side of WipEout 2097.

I saw Burnout running at Pulsar (on the elevated monitors... not in a playable booth) and thought it looked pretty sweet. Very sharp visuals (I did notice the shimmer), excellent speed, and an awesome amount of action on screen at once.

I'm very keen to play it and will reserve judgement until seeing it at home.

I don't think people have been playing PSX games lately. Load up GT2. Watch the textures warp. See the 25fps juddery animation. See the massive, fist size pixels that make up the polygons. Then load up a PS2 game.

Even shithouse looking PS2 games like Sky Odyssey look a ton better than PSX. I can't understand you guys.

Edit: whoops.

that's an interesting take Nathan ....

it's 60hz NSTC right? .....so if you have burnout running on a PAL tv in 60hz mode, if it is full screen .. then arn't you 'streaching' the NSTC picture to fill the higer rex PAL screen ... hence shimmer/alising is more noticable?

meh .... ?

Criterion Studios interview: 4 new games on the way:

http://gamespot.com/gamespot/stories/news/0,10870,2826689,00.html

"Moving forward, the company is planning no less than four new games, which could fall into genres such as RPGs and real-time strategy"

"The arrival of the PlayStation 2 changed a lot. The engineering group was working very closely with SCEI in Japan and got very early access to the machine. The company received one of the earliest PS2 development kits to ship out of Japan. As a result, this early knowledge and understanding was later to benefit the games division. Criterion Games went under massive changes a few years back with a complete refocus away from the PC and toward the superconsoles, specifically PS2. "

"GS: How many developers are using Renderware for their games? Can you tell us about some of the high-profile projects using Renderware that are currently in development?

AW: Well more than 300 around the world. Some of the hit titles you may have seen sporting the RW logo are Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3, Grand Theft Auto III, Pro Evolution Soccer from Konami, Championship Motocross featuring Ricky Carmichael, and of course, Burnout and Airblade. "

"Burnout was a very deliberately targeted title for us. It was our second PS2 development in-house. We specifically targeted this release time, pre-Thanksgiving. We had offers to continue development and ship in the middle of next year, but shooting for fall was something that we really wanted to do. The team worked incredibly hard to meet their dates, and they did a great job. If we had tried a different concept, then it would not have been a Burnout experience. The key experience was racing through traffic, driving like a maniac and smashing the car in a pileup."

hmmm .. haven't rented airblade yet but it's been running on the WEGA at blockbuster 24/7 ... looks pretty nice .. no shimmer or jaggies worth mentioning.

I think the point is most of us can deal with hardware released in 1994 looking bad, but would prefer "TEH REvOLUTION IN GAEMING!!11!" to look a bit better.

Burnout is an excellent game. There is a lot of jaggies if running in pathetic 60hz mode (when will people learn that 60hz is NOT better), but there are tons of cars on screen and the locals are not bad either. This game NEVER slows down and runs at 50fps in PAL while shifting a huge number of polys.

Any real gamer who sits down a does not pre judge a game before he plays it will come to see that burnout is worthy arcade racer and the best on PS2.

I played it non-stop the night I took it home, moron. Please be aware of the following facts -

You are a moron.
I have access to far more games than you.
I have access to far more games eariler then you.
You are a moron.
The ad displays far less flicker than what is present in the game. In that regard, the game looks worse. Far far worse.

If you don't like my opinion, give me your address, and I shall send you fifty cents so you can call someone who cares.

This I agree with. It is pathetic that PS2 games in 60hz run in NTSC colour. That is where PAL60 Dreamcast ownz it's arse, because the pixcels aren't as bad then and all the real gamers agree that when pixcels are good, the game is good.

Also before I forget, Burnout sucks. Thanks for coming.

Airblade on the other hand looks quite nice, if the demo is anything to go by

All I know is that this game practically makes my eyes bleed from the amount of aliasing present. Easily one the jaggiest ps2 games out there!

Get it right, lestat. It is the jaggiest PS2 game.

At least the jaggiest I have seen so far.......which is a lot of games.

I thought my eyes were going to pop out of my head when I was playing Burnout.

I was particularly dissapointed with the fact that when you crash, it always takes those silly cinematic views. I would rather it just go like GTA3 where you barrel into someone, shit goes everwhere, and if you are lucky enough to have your car land back on it's wheels, and doesn't explode, you continue on your way.

I mean really, with ideas like this, I should be designing games. I'd make a car that always lands on it's wheels, and throws fireballs on command. Ha-do-car!

Dude, who on EARTH on this board says or does anything like that?

Come on. Don't be a w*nker DJ, this is getting ridiculous. No one's on here gloating about DC dying (except from the odd SMALL jibe from lambchop).

You're making stuff up now. PS2 fans enjoy their console. I don't think any of us here are saying it's the be all and end all of consoles. It's just the best supported one at the current time. The graphics are good, the games are good, what's wrong with believing that?

My DC cost me $500 on launch. I loved it. It was great fun - and I really enjoy my PS2 as well. What's the fricking crime in that? Even Pep owns a DC.

Thanks for the fanboyism. Really makes my sick friday arvo at home thinking I should be studying and feeling rather cranky. Sorry anyway...

Just the way you go on on our board about PS2 fanboys you make it sound like we're all rabidly attacking people who like Dreamcast and constantly harping on about the system. If you don't like people who do that, whinge at a forum where people do...

Fair enough?

We are touchy aren't we?

Just don't go thinking that my sweeping statements apply to anybody else apart from the people who deserve it, and Lambchop is guilty of dancing on the grave of the DC, and a few other newbies.

If you're taking it personally, it probably just means you're either in a shitty mood, or you've got something to feel guilty about. Bitch.
