What is it with all these faulty games/xboxs? Shouldnt MS have completly made sure that their product is 100% reliable?

Are all these faulty units odd, or does this type of thing happend with almost all console when they launch?

Before you guys start using DOA3 to test on. Bear in mind that there is actually a problem with the actual game in that sometimes it freezes. I have spoken to MS Customer Support about this and they acknowledged it. I had a similar prob with my launch Xbox.

I am afraid to say it, but almost all console launches in the recent past have had some sort of hardware hickup...the PS2 with its laser, the DC with the mispressed GDs. It seems to be the way things go.

I think as consoles get more complicated, more things can go wrong. Also I had a fair amount of trouble with by Dreamcast & Playstation when I first bought them too, so it's nothing new really.

The two people that are suposed to be the most mature are the ones bickering in this thread! Pipe down you two this is a serious matter!

Sorry I haven't replied for a while (had a HUGE weekend, including the seeing of Tool last night, awesome awesome awesome).

The fact that DOA3 doesn't always screw up makes me believe that the problem can't be software. As we all know, software is software, it can't change, so it would (should) have the same problem each time no matter what, seeing as we are all running it on the same hardware.

This is why I think it's a laser problem. Sometimes when the movies play, they will start jumping around and skipping. I know this happens with Rallisport, but that happens all the time, everytime you watch the video, so that has to be a software problem. The fact that the videos work in DOA3, confirms that it has to be a hardware problem. Or else everyone would be seeing these problems occur.

Talking about the packing of games with the console for shipment for it to get repaired, I grabbed myself a nice big knife (got the battle scars to proove it ) and cut away at the foam where the controller actually goes. The foam you get in the box for shipping to the repair centre is different than the foam you actually get with your Xbox, so it makes it easy to cut away. Just put the top part of the foam on its side, get a dvd case and (so it's long ways, you'll want to slide them into position) mark where you'll need to remove the foam to. Once you've cut it all away you should just be able to slip them in there. It's quite easy. Just be careful with that knife! *ouch*

I'll be sending off my system tomorrow.

The problem is that the intro movie turns into a slideshow when my xbox is in 50hz mode.

I'll argue it. S-Video, or Y/C as it is called is in no way superior to Y, Pb, Pr. That is because the C (colour) in the Y/C signal has been broken down further into Pb and Pr, making component a cleaner signal for transcoding into RGB by a TV.

If you claim Y/C is superior then you have any 1 of 2 possible reasons.
1. Your TV has a very poor digital comb filter that makes poor use of a component signal. This would mean it's a pretty bad TV, BTW.
2. You're totally deluded.

Or you own a PAL XBOX.. FACT!!!

The PAL XBOX has problems with the Component cable... Yes in theory it should be a better choice for quality but in reality as seen by nearly everyone who has bought one... it has problems. The S-Video cable doesnt. In this regard I wouldnt recommend the component cable over the S-Video cable for the PAL Xbox unless you are using progressive output. In default operation the PAL XBOX in standard component has stuttering video, jerky and artifact DVD playback and on plasma screens vertical and horizontal banding issues.

Yes, for the US Xbox Component is better than S-Video, and for the PS2 also. Those dont have a problem.

As for TV quality, my TV even makes VF4 on the PS2 look awesome.. thats a game that has feild rendering being displaying on a 100/120hz TV ..... thats pretty awesome. Nearly all 100/120hz TV's (Besides a friends Sony TV) I have seen make games like that look like really bad. 100/120hz Scart TV's included.

I find it very hard to believe that the component cable has anything to do with stuttering video on the xbox as the video encoder isn't responsible for the playback of encoded video. I have seen Xbox video stutter on RGB and Composite. As for banding, there is no banding on the standard 480i component signal. From what I have seen, component video is perfectly fine on the PAL console.

There are plenty of Tvs out there that feature line doubling to eliminate artefacts produced by Field rendering.
Most 100hz TVs have crap 8bit video encoding, and only a few feature superior 10 bit encoding along with line doubling.
My own set eliminates all flicker, doubles all lines to remove aliasing and also doubles the frame rate of all video sources (aside from 60hz material). Now that's awesome.
