On the GC on the other hand it will stand out and is guaranteed pretty major sales.

Especially if they put a picture of the ships on the front covers with the sails showing!  :D

Skies sales on GC being higher than the PS2's... I dunno. I think you're right in the respect that it would perhaps be a big hit on the Cube, but if 1-in-4 buys the game, that's 1 million, but 1-in-20/25 PS2 owners, plus I doubt it may quite hit that on GC worldwide.

Long term, I feel the PS2 version probably could have sold a couple more.

Normally, SNG, I'd be tempted to beat you to a shadow of your mere self after a joke like that...

But the GC's hardware base is increasing. By the time the game is out I'd expect Nintendo to have shifted at least 10-15 million GC's. I also think you've got to take the sales of Super Monkey Ball into account. It's already shifted 700,000 units worldwide on the GC. Do you honestly think it would have sold that many on the PS2. I personally doubt it.

I dunno man, the final fantasy series is pretty good, and Skies would probably be rejected by most PS2 fans, who are mainly mainstream gamers. ???

*sigh* again...save this kind of attitude for ppl who actually care...you have no idea what the PS2 port of Skies would have been like.

Yeah right, with 4MB of VRAM (and nada texture compression)...let's not even go there!

Also, interesting to note the set of double-standards you people seem to have imposed here. It's okay in the first instance to bash the hell out of the industry 'watchdog', ie. Edge Magazine, yet at the same time you cringe like hell when anybody (namely me) takes a poke at the industry bull-terrier, ie. Sony Computer Entertainment.

And you guys call yourselves a "hardcore SEGA resource"? Nothing hardcore about defending Sony. :sigh:

Please explain to me, then, why VF4 is more-or-less a perfect visual conversion, perhaps even a little better than the arcade?

I'll point it out to you again; Sony are just a company out to make money from a hugely cash-spinning market. Edge, however, talk like they know something - WHEN THEY DON'T. I'll let Fasty cover the finer points (as he's a programmer, I'm not), but me and him were discussing last night, they whine on about things like 'control code' - a realtively simple thing to code and implement - as if they're something that requires indepth tinkering and shit like that.

Also, exactly where did he defend Sony in that post? Point out the exact moment to me, because I dunno - hey guys, I must be blind!  :sigh:

For the last time; I want to play Sega games. I do not give a F-U-C-K where they lay their home. But I guess...you do. So when Phantasy Star V comes to the PS2, I'll just be playing it...and you won't.

Grow up. If you don't like us, you know where the door is. Don't let it hit you in the ass on the way out.

What is hardcore, while you put it like that? To me, hardcore is playing the games you want to play and knowing why you like them. It's not a certificate or a badge that comes bundled with one console and miraculously vanishes if you buy another.

I want Sega Rally 3 and VF4. In the case of the former, it appears as if the PS2 will be its first port of call. In the case of the latter, it's already happened. Now if I had the money, I'd buy a PS2 for them. At the end of the day, I could refuse to buy one on principle, yeah, but at the end of the day, these games could well pass me by, and at the end of the day, I'd rather be playing them then not playing them.

Now as for defending Sony, well, defending them blindly isn't on - but you have to keep a realistic perspective on things. The bottom line is, Sega just weren't good enough to stay in the hardware market. Sure, the DC and Saturn were great consoles, I love both mine to bits - if I hadn't have done, this place wouldn't exist right now - but the fact of the matter is, not enough people thought the DC was good enough to merit the money they wanted for it. Maybe it was down to the lack of marketing, or the lack of DVD playback, but the fact of the matter is, it didn't appeal to the market because Sega's vision of a good console wasn't what people wanted. That's the way it is, and I personally rather accept it and move on than pretend it never happened or forfeit playing Sega's games in the future, albeit on other platforms.

And regarding Edge - well, I don't like the whole mind set of the magazine. They take themselves far too seriously, something no good journalist should do. Reviews and editorials are opinions - when you write, you really want to write in a style that states that it is merely that; an opinion. And you can't do that with this whole "we art holier than thou" ego trip they seem to be on. And asides from anything else, they are merely journalists - asides from the odd PR stint for a developer or publisher, wtf do journos do in the creative sense in the industry?

Woah woah - things HAVE changed.  I remember it was mere months ago when it was "I'm NEVER getting a PS2!!" etc etc.

There's a lot of snobbery here.

Shoot, I don't have to explain anything! It's all there, in Helvetica Bold, Page 90 of Edge #108. For those who don't 'subscribe' to the Edge barometer of invective:

"Don't believe those who say that the PS2 version of Virtua Fighter 4 is an arcade-perfect conversion. Graphically, it suffers from a lack of effective antialiasing, leaving harsh edges on the fighters"

There. It's been said, on Edge's behalf. :sarcasm: I guess, since you're evidently getting your back up over Edge's 'worthless' opinions, there's no point in (my) continually invoking them. It's obvious we're sitting on diametrically-opposed sides of the fence. Which brings me, conveniently, to your pro-Sega(?) stance.

You may well choose to support the future lifeblood (ie. sucked dry from the carcass of dead consoles) that is flowing freely through Sony's 'multimedia' diodes. That is your choice, as a CONSUMER. My unabated (Dreamcast) library is keeping me plenty busy, and yes, while you move forward with the bazillion or so other Sony recruits - lapping up your newly 'optimized' PS2 Phantasy Star franchises - I'll prolly be making a fist of Skies of Arcadia...for the first time! A 'true' DC original (just like Soul Calibur Ver.1) that will God-help-us never be despoiled by crossover code. :smug:

Am I missing out on the 'future' of gaming? Not in the least, because I haven't committed to a "replacement" console right now. And why should I? There's no hurry. SEGA is doing what they need to to survive...farming out the games, pacifying the lowest common denomination of Gen-X/Y/ME? consumer. It's their caprice that speaks to the masses, not their undying need to create, to lead by example. The 'true' pro-Sega activists know this already. You're just treading water...in Sony's Dead Sea of Attrition. :D

I came here with an 'active' mind, hoping to contribute. YOU, Mr Foo, have taken exception to my every jaded comment. I don't entertain 'hostilities' gladly. Feel free to gloat. As a non-subscriber to Edge, you obviously don't know any better. Light me up, but good! Toasst me baby! :smashy:

Though this may be a Sega site, (with Sega fanatics) you would be blind if you neglect all the new Sega games being released on other consoles. sure we hate it that we aren't getting arcade perfect ports anymore, no more Shenmue sequels on a Sega machine. but don't be stupid to ignore SEGA games just because they are NOT on a Sega console. that's pathetic really. they still ARE Sega games right? you WANT to support Sega right? a true gamer doesn't care what console the games are on. only silly idiots need to flame eachothers console. what do you win by that? does Sony, Nintendo, Sega pay you money for that? hell no. will they be grateful? no.

and one more time: not that I think that any magazine is worth my money, but Edge is a nice cover with designeradverts and that's it, extremely boring to read. (add they know shit about gaming) I've bought a few Edges in the past, so you can't say I'm judging them by it's fancy cover  :p

And once again, if you BOTHERED to look at the arcade version, you'll find the jaggies are worse than the PS2 game. I appreciate very much so that the arcade version is running on a high-definition monitor, but so do other arcade games, and they don't look like their character models could slit your wrist...

VF4 is not an innovatively beautiful looking game. It looks great...but other games possess finer graphics. The disappointment stems from the fact that some of us were expecting something a little more. The bottom line is: The game kicks ass, regardless of graphical quality.

lol, please notice, I am not the only one who has a problem with Edge...so this 'pro-Sega' stance...let's read on.

*yawn* Have you read a WORD I've said? A single word? For the last time: I do not own a PS2. I don't even own a PSOne. I own next to 70 Dreamcast games, PAL and import combined, and you know, short of the 2K2 sports series, which I'm in the process of buying, I'm pretty much done picking all the stuff that's actually worth it up! So yes, sadly, unlike some people, I've chosen to move on. If you don't want to, that's your choice - but my Dreamcast remains as a part of my setup. PSO still gets, on average, an hour a day. I'm planning to go back through Shenmue 2 with a fine toothcomb very shortly too.

Note that Phantasy Star V isn't an online game. Sure, PSO's probably heading to the system, but Phantasy Star V is a NEW GAME, and anyone who's interested in the series, and of course, Sega themselves, will naturally at least be able to raise an eyebrow - and even though it's on PS2, maybe they'll be able to bring themselves to actually play the game!  :sarcasm: btw, for your information, I finished Skies on the 22nd December 2000. It ranks as one of my favourite RPGs of all time, and beats the Final Fantasy series with a whip so harshly that quite frankly, I want to see it on PS2 and GC - I want it to make a profit so that a) They'll be a sequel and b) So it'll show Sega and Overworks that some people out there actually care about them.

I ask you AGAIN. Do you want Sega to succeed? Do you want them to turn a profit? Or would you rather they go bankrupt and the 9 development teams disband into nothingness, leaving a very large hole in the triple-A development community? I don't have a PS2. I'm not getting one at least until Kingdom Hearts comes out. Even then it'll be second hand as cheap as I can possibly swindle it down to.

You came here with an active mind? Why, then, do you insist on cheering over Skies of Arcadia's cancellation on PS2? Do you want to see a sequel? Do you want to see it sell well and turn a profit? I feel you do not...you're clearly a jaded, jealous, twisted and bitter gamer.

Let's make this clear: Sony didn't screw Sega. Sega screwed Sega. They fucked up royal with the Saturn marketting and design - but do I care? No. The Saturn has NiGHTS, Sega Rally, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Elevator Action Returns, Sonic Jam, Virtua Fighter 2, Burning Rangers, Vampire Saviour, X-Men Vs. Street Fighter Exhumed, Fighters Megamix, Last Bronx OH DO YOU WANT ME TO GO ON? I loved every single one of those games right there. Every last one of them - especially NiGHTS, which in my opinion is the best game ever. And if a sequel comes out to any one of them, I want to play it, even if it's on PS2.

I am not, and never will defend the PS2 - run that through your head. But it's never ever been about machines - it's about games. If NiGHTS comes out on PS2, so be it. I'll be first in the queue to pick up a PS2.

Entertain the hostilities as much as you like, I'm just laughing at your feeble attempts to act like the 'hardcore' man.

Um, the PS2 has texture compression, just not in hardware and there is such a thing as streaming from CD... most ppl just use that 4MB as a massive frame buffer... Jak and Daxter is testament to the PS2's ability to produce lush visuals on the same scale as Skies of Arcadia.

It's not double standards when bashing Edge and "defending" Sony... Edge is an overrated, biased magazine that is a far cry from the gaming bible you claim it is. Sony are a company who make games for the masses without being arrogant assholes about it.

Nothing HARDCORE about defending Sony... um, you just dont "get" it do you? We're not zealots we're Sega fans. It's not required to hate everything else and bash everything else.

I'll prolly be making a fist of Skies of Arcadia...for the first time! A 'true' DC original (just like Soul Calibur Ver.1) that will God-help-us never be despoiled by crossover code.

Please say you've actually played Skies of Arcadia!

Oh yeah, and Soul Calibur was an arcade title based on sony hardware.

What's this "crossover code" nonsence? Another Edge-ism? Crossover code isnt something that can become impure, it's a language structure that helps get things done in computers... now for the most part in a game (game data structures, logic etc) it's all pretty generic but even where it is optimised for a particular machine it CAN be optimised for another.

And again... DCE, if you're here to talk Sega titles you're totally welcome but:

Dont question how hardcore we are
Dont assume you're always right
Do save the anti sony bullshit for someone who gives a flying fuck.

Now if you're cool with that then by all means stay... Sega's got a lot of stuff coming at E3 that's worthwhile discussion but otherwise you can leave.

I stand corrected :p

And what with VF4 and such getting upgraded versions for the other consoles, the only reason I'd want a PS2 right now is (still) for ICO.  Anyway, I'm OT.
