1. Sega are posting operating profits again.

2. They've got another arcade board coming, the Chihiro, based on Xbox.

3. VF4 has sold 1.5 million units worldwide now, and VF Evolution is coming in August to the arcade, GC and Xbox possibly by the end of the year.

4. The story I'm most chuffed about - the DC lives on! Sammy and Sega have teamed up to make System X, which is basically ment to be the ultimate low-end, low-cost entry level arcade board for shopping malls, chip shops, etc. So hopefully you'll be able to play something that isn't 20 years old while you wait for your kebab on a friday night.

Seems like Sega are really on the up. Just give me a new Sega Rally and I can die right then, a happy man. :D

But Skies of Arcadia has been canned for the PS2  :( Which is a shame really as it would have shown a lot of PS2 owners  how poor the Final Fantasy series really is.

It had been put back to mid 2003 anyway - I think the sequel was ment to be out by then...

...but anyway, other than that, it's all good news! Sheesh, you people... :p

I reckon E3 should be very interesting this year...

And it gets better and better and better!

Quote:
from the news
Planet-Sega are reporting that Sega have announced an all new Sonic game for 2003. The game is said to take on the form of the previous Sonic Adventure games (read: a 3D platformer). Who's developing it and for which platform it's headed remain unclear, although if it's Sonic Team (as we hope), we're tipping GameCube.

Also, a new Shining Force game is in development, again, the platform is unclear, and a new action adventure game is to be developed based on the House of the Dead. They did this before with Zombie Revenge. We weren't impressed. Hopefully, this'll be better. Again, team and platform unannounced.

Also, Sonic Team have announced a new game for the Xbox. Called Blinx, the game is said to be a 3D platformer and will feature a giant cat. In goggles. Head over to CVG for the full low down.

New Sonic! New Sonic Team stuff! Cracking!

Aye! All good! So what can we expect to be announced at E3? Must make a list:

- Shenmue 2 (Xbox)
- Blinx (Xbox)
- Panzer Dragoon Orta (Xbox)
- HotD3 (Xbox)
- Crazy Taxi 3 (Xbox)
- VF4 Evolution (Arcade, GC? Xbox?)
- Beach Spikers (GameCube)
- Skies of Arcadia (Gamecube)
- F-Zero (Gamecube)
- PSO Ep 1 + 2 (Gamecube)
- Gungrave (PS2)
- The sports titles (every format)
- Sega Rally 3 (format unknown)
- 5 Chichiro games, 3 Sega Triforce games (inc. F-Zero)

Man, this is just off the top of my head but things are infinately looking better for Sega now. As Mark said to me earlier, this is the Sega we know and love :)

In the latest OPS2M a game called Switch by Sega is mentioned which was on the Mega CD. I haven't heard of this game before, what's it about?

It was a point and click game with, suprise suprise, lot of switches. Flicking these switches often had some comedy outcome. A bit like Stupid Invaders, and just like Stupid Invaders it was a bit crap.

As for the new games they are sounding luuuuuuurrrvly. Im especially keen to find out more about that completely new Sonic Team one. To be honest news on Virtua Fighter and Sega Rally doesnt really interest me THAT much. I want platform/adventure goodness.

What I'd like is -

All of the current WRC cars.

Sega Rally 1 style handling, perhaps a tad quicker (ala PAL 50 optimised Rally 1 through 60hz) to make it more challenging.

A mixture of open stages (ala McRae) and closed circuits (ala... well the previous rally games).

Online play with a microphone system (so I can hear people squal like piglets when I thrash them).

NO BATTLE DAMAGE (IMO, it's a shit addition to racing games).

Hmm, that's an interesting subjkect actually. Wouldn't it be great if they introduced some sort of co-op mode where you had a driver swinging the wheel and co-driver barking instructions down the mic online? Warrants a further look, methinks.

Battle Damage does depend on the style of game too. For arcade style racing games, there is little point - Daytona asides, where a silly mistake should be punished by poorer car performance in multiplayer, but if Sega Rally 3 is intended to be even more of a sim, then it might benefit it. The various Rally games by Digital Illusions have benefitted majorly from battle damage effects.

The problem with battle damage is, the more you drive on the edge, the more you fall of it - and I hate having a dented motor...

Woohoo!!!

About bleeding time...that one of 'their' ports were denied them. I mean, come on, pulling the plug on Half-Life/DC, when it was all but finished (DC-UK even reviewed the Gold disc). Only to see a cheap & nasty port surface on that platform in short order?

Truly, as if any of Sony's "number" will miss a truly groundbreaking DC property. They won't even blink.

Note to Masta Killa: Mate, you can pour me that long, kool alcoholic beverage now. And keep 'em coming, yeah? ;)

While I don't really care whether it is coming to the PS2 or not (why would I? I've already played it, and loved it, on my DC), I do have to agree with Sion that it IS a shame that PS2 owners will not now see how mediocre their cherished RPG series' really are. You know those ones which they hold in so high regard and continuosly speak off *cough* FF series *cough*.

Sega of Japan - well, I dunno...but SOA lost some serious money on the translation of this since it sold about 2 copies (and I bought one of them) and you don't want it to come out on a console where it might be able to break the franchise even?

I'm beginning to question how much of a Sega fan you are.

*sigh* again... save this kind of attitude for ppl who actually care... you have no idea what the PS2 port of Skies would have been like.

Yeah, Sony owners getting denied the chance to play Skies is a real shame. Ok, so DC HL got canned, but these tit-for-tat stuff helps no one, least of all Sega, who now will go without any sales for the game on that console, and means that, unless the GC port sells well, the long term future of the series has to be called into question.

Well if both versions of Skies were released it wouldn't surprise me if the GC version would outsell the PS2 version. The GC currently has a handful of RPG's in the pipeline (Evolution Worlds, a sequel to Tales of Destiny 2, FF Unlimited and one or two others) the PS2 on the other has a pile. While Skies of Arcadia will probably easily match anything the PS2 has to offer it doesn't carry a big name or well known franchise like Final Fantasy, Wild Arms, Breath of Fire, Star Ocean, Grandia or a Suikoden. There's a good chance it would have been ignored in a swamp of sequels to the games I've just mentioned. On the GC on the other hand it will stand out and is guaranteed pretty major sales.
