I was always of the opinion that 60Hz stuff couldn't possibly be that much smoother. But it is. I especially like the lack of flicker that was always present before, and the improved speed is a welcome bonus. I think your TV's broken, Nathan. Mine displays the DC's 60Hz signal without a problem. I can't comment on the PS2's performance in this regard, as I haven't played Burnout or any other game that supports it. ? |

This was going to be a reply to a topic but I want to start a discussion.60hz PAL. Inferior to 50hz PAL.
Hmmmm. quote:
Tell me what is so great about PAL games having a 60hz option? All you get is larger pixels, washed out color (perhaps due to the pixels) and worst of all, a skewed image. I don't know about you but I like the wheels on my F355 to be round, not egg shaped. I like my Phoenix mirror to be round, not oval. People should not look like twigs. And PS2 jaggies?.. I know, lets make them much worse by playing in 60hz.
Well F355, like all Jap/US games, was designed at the 640x480 resolution, so playing at 60hz should give you the picture at the correct aspect ratio. When you run in 50hz, the 480 vertical resolution is squashed, you get borders, and then the picture becomes skewed. Sounds like you have a problem with your TV - is it widescreen, and trying to zoom the image? Although your TV has higher vertical resolution at 50hz, the game still outputs the 480 vertical resolution, hence you get those damn borders - a complete waste of space. quote:
You get all these problems for what?.. A almost unnoticeable increase in refresh rate. Wow.
The argument about PAL/NTSC is only relevant when using a composite signal, but yes, PAL colour encoding is superior to NTSC. However, the PS2 outputs in NTSC at 60hz, whereas the DC outputs in PAL at 60hz, which is superior, an oversight on Sony's part, IMHO. However if you use RGB, then you get a much better picture, no colour encoding is taking place at all. Also, when you next go into an arcade, count how many of the machines are running at 50hz... :-)

I feel compelled to agree with Nathan. He is obviously a very smart fellow who has his head screwed on right, and eats froot loops for breakfast.60hz PAL is just plain crap. When I am playing Streetfighter whatever on my Dreamcast, I don't want full screen and full speed! pah!! I want large noticeable borders, the slower speed, the missing animation. Damnit I want my timing to be thrown right off! PS - I get to see infinitely more games than Nathan, and earlier too! Edited by - Candy Arse on 28 Nov 2001 10:31:53 |

All of the above games suffer in 60hz. All are distorted in 60hz, just take a look at the oval shaped 'circle' on the title screen of Shenmue for proof. And the drop in resolution is quite noticeable in each title (the white lines on the side of the track in F355 are quite jagged in 60hz). And just watch the jaggies increase in 60hz when playing Burnout.
The title-screen circle is circular in 60Hz but oval in 50Hz on every TV I've played on, since the 50Hz version has borders at the top and bottom. You say you're playing on a Widescreen? What aspect settings do you have your TV on? -- "Things you never thought you'd hear, #273 - Tim being labelled as a pirate-sympathiser" (Jon Ross in reply to Oracle, rec.games.video.sega) |

I've been thinking about this some more since I've actually woken up now. The signal coming from my PS2 is s-video, so it won't be in PAL or NTSC anyway, so I reckon that's irrelevant. Nathan, What I think is happening, is that (as hinted by zathras) there's an auto-zoom mode on the Sony which will mess nastily with any input signal and should always be turned off whenever possible, which I've done on my AV1 (DVD & Sky) but not on my AV2 (PS2 via s-video) so I think going into the menu on the TV and finding the Autosize for AV2 and turning it off might help... then can just leave the WS setting at Smart, which on a 4:3 input will zoom to full screen but keep the aspect ratio -can be a pain losing a little off the top & bottom in games but at least wheels look round and on a 16:9 input will look right. Now, I took Burnout back cos it didn't support my wheel, but I'll have to find another 60Hz title to test it on - anyone got any recommendations? Right, I've been investigating some more. Apparently, on the Sony when you get an NTSC picture which I now discover you CAN get over s-video (this tweak shouldn't apply to PAL60 but the problem sounds so similar I can't believe it's not related) there's an additional picture option on the menu called Hue, which I'll try out. Ok first of all the picture is skewed in 60hz, not 50hz. 50hz is fine with a circle being a circle. 60hz is skewed. And my WEGA was brought just before the auto wide screen features were introduced, so no auto zoom here. It's a normal 68cm 4:3 BTW.Now, 50hz should never be skewed because a NTSC game at 525 lines fits into the PAL 625 lines with little borders top and bottom. In full screen 60hz the picture needs to be skewed just to fit the screen. Logical right? Why do you people keep saying that 50hz is skewed? And to those who suggest that some games run 60hz, 625 lines well where does PAL console find the extra 17% more power to do this?
BTW my DC is hooked up using S-Video, the PS2 using Component cables. Mmm Skyscraper... I love you. |

Are you comparing an NTSC source being converted to Pal 60 to a "proper" Pal source?Either way, your TV sounds buggered. |

OK, the vertical resolution of the output video signal is 525 whether you run at 50hz or 60hz. If you run at 60hz, those 525 lines fill a 4:3 aspect ratio TV. This is the original Jap/US aspect ratio - if the developers designed a circle, you will also see a circle - since the resolutions match. When you run at 50hz, the game still displays 525 lines, but you now have 625 lines on your TV to fill. So your 525 line image is squashed in the middle of your TV, with 50 line borders at the top and bottom. The result is the image is skewed. If you have a widescreen, you could zoom this image to lose the borders. But you would still have a 525 line image - exactly the same as if were running at 60hz. quote:
And to those who suggest that some games run 60hz, 625 lines well where does PAL console find the extra 17% more power to do this?
Well that is correct, you can't have 625 line image AND display it at 60hz, well not on a TV anyway! quote:

Oddly, you can hardly make out anything more than ten feet in front of the car in Burnout at 50Hz- a major design flaw- but in 60Hz you can see a lot farther.Anyway, I'd rather have PAL's higher resoloution, a well-optimised game (i.e. no speed loss) and the better colourisation. It has the staff of the Jo and the access to the bow. Note! |

Well I was comparing to composite! :-) RGB _is_ better than S-Video, it does give you the purest signal, but I agree it is marginal, unless you're fussy (like me :-)) |

The strongest difference i've seen between 50 and 60hz was in pso, in 50hz your character moves a lot slower. In 60hz however the screen does seem to be more interlaced. I've no import consoles so I can't somment on the NTSC 60hz.I have heard NTSC stand for Never The Same Colour edit: I think Burnout looks great in 60hz btw. - statement - Edited by - Marvelon on 28 Nov 2001 21:17:09 |

So what the **** do you want anamorphic for? Do you even know what it means? SPidER-HaMMeTT replies: You ARE joking right? There is 3 main sizes... 1) CinemaScope - 1.66:1 ratio (which is what Robo Criterion is in, WITHOUT anamorphic) 2) 16:9 - What CinemaScope becomes, AFTER anamorphic enhancment. Smaller black bars on a 4:3 ratio television. 3) 4:3 - Standard commercial television viewing size. You DO realise that even WITHOUT a widescreen 16:9 television, anamorphic enhancment still reduces the size of the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. Thus, I think standard CinemaScope on a 4:3 ratio telly is TOO small, where as I like Anamorphic enhancment on a 4:3 telly, as it becomes 16:9 ratio. That being said, anamorphic enhancment on an ALREADY 16:9 ratio movie, stretches it onto 4:3 ratio, taking up ALL space on standard televisions. Eg. RoboCop 3. Vzzzbx replies: Are you seriously saying you'd rather stretch your picture to fill the screen? You're not supposed to do that. What you're talking about is a serious distortion of the picture. If you're going to run anamorphic coded transfers without compressing the picture for a 4:3 screen, you're doing it wrong. Just like 99% of electronic shops run by stupid people. DJ Fusion: You're right. Prince Underpants: Pool Room.

"Thank you, I must be a dick, because I played it for about 20 hours and thought it was a jaggy shimmering mess but if you say it looks good then I must be wrong." Good idea chump. Nathan replies: No the question would be 'Excuse me Sir, is the ad footage from very early development?'. I can't believe you or anyone would agrue that the game don't not look better than it does on the ads. It's nuts. 60hz... Easy. Switch any game to 60hz and looks at the brick sized pixcels. Switch to 50hz and watch them shrink along with much of the jaggies effect. Mech replies: I don't think people have been playing PSX games lately. Load up GT2. Watch the textures warp. See the 25fps juddery animation. See the massive, fist size pixels that make up the polygons. Then load up a PS2 game. Even shithouse looking PS2 games like Sky Odyssey look a ton better than PSX. I can't understand you guys. I would have asked her out, but she didn't date cereal. She told me the hacker left her a note with the initials "HN". There were smilies painted on the walls. I had a sick one on my hands. I heard the distinctive sound of a gun being cocked** behind my head. The dame had set me up. I used one of my magnums to make a retort, and the other to make a satisfying smashing sound. The dame was drenched. I hauled her up onto the chair by her hair, but only her hair came up with my hand. The dame was wearing a wig. It was no dame. She had a dodgy goatie. It'll just be involving other people who shouldn't be bothered by such stuff, and I don't want that kind of thing happening. Zarevz replies: Good afternoon Dreamer, I too was rather concerned, at the time, about having to resort to third parties in contacting you, but I tried to be as polite as possible about the matter considering the time over at the Eastern States. Perhaps I was overestimating the situation, but when thinking back to what was actually done to the forum I'm sure anybody here at that time would agree it was the appropriate action to undertake. I personally hope that nobody hassled you about me getting in contact, because in reality it's not like this is an everyday event, and I'm sure reasonable people would understand. Remember Dreamer that the hacker could just have easily destroyed other files of more importance without realising (eg. Accounting Databases) and hence you needed to know that this was happening so that you could stop it. I'll make sure to email from me from now on. Hope your date goes well. Catch ya. Dreamer replies: Someone organise a blind date for me? Zarevz replies: Dreamer, you don't know of Carey Badcoe(ex Publisher, Business & Technology)? I know Next is isn't run out of someone's back yard garage, but surely it's withing the same complex... It actually reminds me of a an Australian Publication, Silicon Chip, that virtually started out in a garage-sized office space. Same thing with another called Cut Throat Cheats over here in Perth, but they later collapsed when the artist and one writer left. It's quite strange as a child when you envisage magazines like Hyper to be the gospel, when in reality it's just everyday people running the things. BTW - Did Elliot pass on the message?

Also the Aus cube hasn't been released yet(again at this point in time).

In TV's of this day that don't run interlaced 60 frames a second is much more visible so it will look a million times better when running on a newer TV at ACTUAL 60 frames per second.David

If so, then the i stands for interlaced and this means (effectively) that there needs to be two frames drawn to get a full image. Sonic replies: 480i doesnt exist to my knowledge.. if it does, then it is a standard TV that everyone has been useing for ages in the US (Our telly's are 576 not 480 verticle lines) 480P is a progressive display (Hence the P not I which stands for Progrssive not Interlaced) it displays both fields at the same time (Known as a frame) rather than 1 field after another (A field being half a whole image, this creats flicker) Want me to explain more? it would take MANY hours to explain.. BTW Australias official HD TV standard will be 1080i - 1920x1080 interlaced.

And spending 2500 on a standard TV just for size is pretty crazy imo. aLl YrOu PcItuRe QuAolIty aRe BeLoneG tO sONny! I did quite a bit of research considering this is the second TV we have ever bought.. And it costs a fortune too, so I wasnt going to just throw that ammount of money away.. I do feel sorry for you spending 2 and a half grand on a normal TV.. Thats alot of money to spend on a TV while you "wait" for HD spec's to come up to scratch (Which is a good idea as current HD TV's suck pretty bad..) DJ Fusion replies: If you call a 32 inch Trinitron Widescreen a normal TV then pfft you're a goose dude.
quote: Originally posted by Sonic: If your spending that much money you would be an idiot not to get the TV I did, it uses the Falconic chip (Invented by Philips) to do real time interpolation, it allso does Digital Scan and Line Doubling, the end result is an image thats equal to progressive scan except it has double the framerate...The model I bought has since been pulled off the market as they want to put it only in there high end TV's as a selling point, but the features name is DNM if you wanna look for it... DJ Fusion replies: And how much was yours then? Sonic replies: Mine was 2400 (knocked down from 2500) with an extra 3 years waranty 2480 The new model will cost 3k+ and the only other model that has it costs 7ish grand and is a 92cm widescreen. DJ Fusion replies: So it's only 29" not 32"..? Sonic replies: Yeah, 68cm 4:3 or 92cm 16:9 are the only 2 model's available that have this feature. DJ Fusion replies: No thanks. Sonic replies: I kinda feel sorry for DJ Fusion wanting that little bit of extra screen when he's not really getting that much extra screen and it wont be doubling his framerate or giving him a near/better-than progressive image quality.. His choice though.

So I'm not sure now. It's hard to determine the looks Megaman replies: OK then you need to get yourself good and drunk. X MAN replies: Ok, what you do is, this is very hard to do mind you, but it never fails for me, you go up to her and ask her out for dinner, a movie, what ever. quote: Originally posted by ruslah 4:69: One of my mates is building up a Datto 1600 as a Competition/Show car, and he wants to hook up a DC to his little telly. He knows how to do all this, but he was wondering if there was any way of getting on the net. Like, instead of using a land line, can you get on the net using a Mobile Phone?segadylan replies: The Nokia 9210 has a modem in it. The 8210 (my phone) has a 9.6k data facility, and the 8250 has a 14.4 data facility. These act as modems basically. If you hooked a data suite cable from the phone's terminal to an IRDA hub, you have in effect the mobile acting as a server. The DC, using a BBA, not a modem, could connect to a compatible IRDA device, which will send signals to the phone. The phone, which is connected to your ISP, will simply act as a secondary regulator of the data. The problem with this is imcompatibility with some ISP's, as most only use TCP/IP, which would require the phone to have an appropriate programme. This could be transferred onto a writable sim-card, so long as the application was small enough, which I seriously doubt. This would need to be installed on the IRDA hub, and the phone would simply relay data. It is definitely possible, but potentially quite expensive.

Do a uni degree man, not just for academic's sake! I had so much fun in the first year with all my new drinking buddies etc etc! We did so much $hit together - drinks, sports, girls etc etc. And of course we passed our first year quite alright. I reckon Uni's social life is way too under-rated. Buddies you make at Uni will be your "contacts" for life. HECS can be a biatch but you can opt to pay later. Beleieve it or not, I'm already on my 8th year in Uni! Oh yeah, do well at your HSC and you'll be invited to be a scholarship recipient. There's quite a number of scholarships available. Never be afraid to apply for them, eventhough you think you're not qualified. Darn, I'm getting paid to write this message during my work time! Do you know what this area is all about? University of NSW is located in *guess* NSW! So you got that right mate!. It's located in Kensington, Sydney. About 10-15 minutes away from Sydney University. Over time, when you've been through primary school and high school eventually, you'll know which subjects are your favourites. You may then choose an area of study (such as psychology) at Uni. To study psychology, you have to enrol under Bachelor of Arts I think. Good luck! Captain Obvious replies: dad said psychoology was all about rats and stuff runing aroudn in mazes nad dogs that dribble and birds thta pres s lever things and peeple who are crazy is this troo? n_drew replies: Your dad is half-right. Though in psychology we study HUMAN's (rather than rats and dogs) behaviour in general. Captain Obvious replies: so do yuo just look at peeple then or what aria do you do?! n_drew replies: Tell you what. Send me an email at ndrew@bigpond.net.au and I'll respond further.
